This blog is a workspace for my reading and writing.  I’m gathering books and advice and experience and piecing them together into words and thoughts and bits of prose. Someday, I hope to publish stories and books that I enjoy and that other people might like to read.

My ABOUT page morphs periodically. It changes like the Objective statement in a resume, tailored to the moment, dynamic, not static – open minded, ready to embrace new ideas and beliefs.  My watchwords: hope, lovingkindness, perseverance, determination – sometimes hard won, but always my aim.

One last thing you should know about me, I have a love-hate relationship with technology. I have little patience for spending the time it takes to learn to use it, but once I know how, I adore it. You will see evidence of my impatience below and in other posts where the formatting is crap. All those tildes below were added to retain spaces that, otherwise, would absolutely NOT stay unless something was typed in them. And, when you see that some are indented (precisely and uniformly 12 spaces) and some are lined up along the left margin (despite also being indented 12 spaces), you’ll know when I decided to cut my losses and stop trying. Which just goes to show that perseverance and determination must be applied in a practical way. This bothers my somewhat OCD psyche, but eventually, I will forget how messy this looks. And hopefully, the formatting will not detract from the spirit of the words.

Here are some bits of verse that resonate with me.

I expect to pass through this world but once.
Any good thing, therefore, that I can do
or any kindness I can show to any creature,
let me do it now.
Let me not defer or neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

~~ Stephen Grellet

There is freedom waiting for you,
On the breezes of the sky,
And you ask “What if I fall?”
Oh but my darling,
What if you fly?
~~ Erin Hanson
Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
~~ Robert Frost
Hope is the Thing with Feathers
“Hope” is the thing with feathers –
That perches in the soul –
And sings the tune without the words –
And never stops – at all –
And sweetest – in the Gale – is heard –
And sore must be the storm –
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm –
I’ve heard it in the chillest land –
And on the strangest Sea –
Yet – never – in Extremity,
It asked a crumb – of me.
~~ Emily Dickinson

  1. All the luck to you in every area of your life. Whenever you feel like you need a boost or a reminder that you’re not just that One Weird Person and that other people out there have had similar experiences, come back to this comment.

I love the enchanting picture of the stone-house! That’s badass, did you take the photo yourself? Thanks a lot! – Troy

  3. I took that photo in 2008.

Ha! Ha! As if I could do all that CB networking and power tool operating! No, a person who lives somewhere around here is responsible for all that obsession. When I mentioned this to my friends and duly showed the pictures, one of the guys said he had seen the car before at a tech swap meet.

And here’s something I did way back when…I got his call numbers and looked them up and got a little scoop on the guy. (That is the way a librarian’s mind works, or perhaps a reader/writer/voyeur…) Yes. With someone’s call numbers, the world has access to all that information. A man named Thomas Something-or-other applied for permission to command all those antennae in 2007. He renewed that license in 2011. So if that little red Ford is still in one piece, I’d say he’s still driving it around and astonishing people now.
