He only nodded. The house was quiet.
“Do you want me to go in with you?” she asked.
He blinked and found a word. “No.”
She squeezed his hand. “Good luck.” A moment later, her footsteps faded to silence behind him.
The door opened before he put his hand on the doorknob. His mother’s eyes were red, but she smiled.
“I’m so glad you’re home,” she said, and hugged him.
