The words of our Trailblazer
Above my desk there hangs a NaNoWriMo poster that features the words of Chris Baty. Here are a few of those words, in no particular order.
We can all do amazing, impossible things when given a deadline, a supportive community, and unlimited access to chocolate and caffeine.
Whatever you think you are, you are more than that.
Make no mistake: you will be writing a lot of crap.
Combine a deadline with a supportive community, and great stuff will happen every time.
It seems Chris expounds the idea of deadlines and supportive communities more than once, and there is probably good reason for that. The deadline really is the thing that makes it happen. It’s the ticking clock, the bomb ready to explode, the onerosity about to ruin your life. But if the deadline is about getting it done, then the supportive community is what makes the doing a joy. I’ve made some new NaNo friends this year and they have put the Pollyanna gladness in my noveling time. They’ve been there with supportive words and creative ideas, and if I gain nothing else this year, that will be enough. …but being greedy, I want the novel, too.
Tomorrow…you can look forward to more Batyisms.
