Each of us lives within an individual construct of reality. It’s the world we’ve created brick by brick from our experiences and interactions with people, places and things. Within our own personal matrices there is, in each of us, a pattern we use to measure success. It is quite often the case that the shape of the pattern varies depending on whether we are measuring ourselves or others. We are quick to encourage and accept the accomplishments of others, no matter what they may be, while holding ourselves to a higher standard.
I’m thinking of this right now, because the reality of where we are in the process of creating our NaNo novels is beginning to reveal where we may find ourselves on November 30. Nothing is certain until that day is over, but I just want to say, that what we should take away from this – no matter where we finish – is that we attempted it. We learned something. We grew. And we can never be anything but winners if we see that and hold it in our hearts. Every experience we have enriches us, regardless of the outcome.
I’ll admit, that’s hard for me to accept sometimes, not because I don’t believe it, but because there is a sense of loss in setting my sights on an objective and then not attaining it. I’m wishing each of us a realistic outlook and the spirit to accept our accomplishments with grace. That includes those who achieve the 50K. Remember, it’s important to be a good winner, too, and not gloat too much. There is much to be said for humility.
Beholder explanation, if needed or desired.
Beholder Miniature for sale here. (retrieved 11.20.14……I wasn’t sure how to credit the picture of the beholder, but figured if anyone wanted to buy a small beholder, the seller probably wouldn’t mind… There were some really awesome original artworks on Deviantart, but that would have involved contacting an artist for permisson and I’m entirely too impetuous for that.)
